Plagues? bugs!

Oh -wait- we live in the country now!

Leading up to 06/06/06 I was quitely laughing to myself about the impending doom stories and the new Omen release. I just realized we made it past and it seems there's not much to report; or at least I thought.

The wife and I saw some huge bugs today. I didn't take a picture of it but I evicted a 2" spider off the back deck today! It's body was about 3/4" long and it wasn't happy when I served notice!

The past couple weeks I've noticed an incredible about amount of catepillars around the house and local park. (I'll have to get some pics of those.) In 16 yrs of being together (5 yrs of marriage), it was news to me today that the wifey won't touch them! Lil'daddy and I like to return them to yummy tree leaves and pet the furry ones.

This guy was on our sliding glass door and scared the bejebees out of the wife! I was fascinated but I don't think she was amused. It got served as well!

I don't have a picture that does scale well but mothra was 3 or 4 inches long with about a 5 inch wing span.

This is what I could quickly find out about mothra...

I think it's a Polyphemus Moth, Antheraea polyphemus, one of the Giant Silkworms in the Family Saturniidae. The large caterpillars eat leaves from alder, basswood, birch, chestnut, elm, hickory, maple, poplar sycamore, and oak as well as other hardwood trees. They only live a few days and do not eat as adults. Adults only live to mate and lay eggs.

Wow! That's one big moth!

A month or two ago the girls and I discovered a tree with a large area swarming with caterpillars. I took several pictures while holding Misty. Everytime I would get too close she would SQUEEL and the caterpillars would stiffen their bodies on end. Stangest thing I've seen.

Cool moth!! I also live in the country... and I have this crappy breezeway that is in desperate need of attention... Either way, there is something critters love about the astroturf floor covering in there that my DH refuses to let me pull up... there was a rooster in there a couple of months ago (yea, like a cockadoodle doo rooster, go figure) and today I sat out there for a while and there is a sparrow with a nest, a huge toad frog, and a large scary looking lizard that I thought was a snake and about peed on myself. YAY for country livin'!!
